Rating the Macs - QMJHL Draft Day

2015-06-05

With the annual QMJHL draft coming up in Sherbrooke, Quebec on Saturday, twitter guy caught up with Macs Head coach Tim Boyce to get a few words about each player that is on the CSR draft eligible list.

While a lot has to go right on draft day for a player to hear his name called, here is what coach had to say about each guy listed:

CSR List can be found here: http://theqmjhl.ca/central-scouting-list/

1st Round

Shane Bowers – Not much more needs to be said about Shane.  He is a player that only comes around once in a very long time.  Great player but better person.  Dedicated to the game and great team player.  I look forward to following him at the next level where ever that may be.  Shane is poised to become the highest drafted Halifax McDonald in the teams 40yr history.  The previously highest drafted was Stephen Dixon to the Screaming Eagles 6th overall.

3rd Round

Matthew Welsh – Matt is mature beyond his years.  The bigger the game the better he plays.  What I like most about Matt is how cool he is under pressure.   Technically sound, he very rarely has to scramble in the net because he is always in position

Jack Cameron – Jack has a lot of potential.  Great first pass and a tremendous frame.  Once he fills out he will be a good sized defenseman.  Combine that with his high hockey IQ and Jack will be a great pick for any team.  Capable of running a power play because he has good puck skills and can process a play beyond the first pass and read a developing play.Jack also led our team in shot blocks this season.

Keegan Gauthier – Keegan had a great 1st yr with our club.  Big and physical, he is strong in the corners and front of the net.  He possesses good hands in tight and has a heavy snap and wrist shot which is dangerous inside the hash marks in the offensive zone.  Great teammate, very quiet in the room but always looking for feedback from the coaches to help improve his game.

5th Round

Kirklin Allen – Kirklin had a solid rookie season for us. Great team mate, a true professional.  Kirklin is going to continue to improve because he works extremely hard in practice and is dedicated to the gym as well.  The quality I like about Kirklin is he never gives up on a puck in practice.  He battles.

Christian Huntley – Great edges on his skates.  Very elusive in open ice.  You think you have him properly angled in the neutral zone and he can quickly cut back on you.  Quiet leader.  Very reliable.  Started to recognize his offensive potential in playoffs.  Very heads up skater with the puck.

Rounds 6 to 8

Josh Webb – Josh is an intense competitor.  Josh wins the majority of his battles in the corners.  He is a powerful skater and a fearless shot blocker.

Rounds 9 to 12

Nick Ormon – The leagues top defenseman award winner isn’t flashy, hes just a really steady, reliable defenseman.  Very good in all three zones, you can trust that when Nick has the puck on his stick he is going to make the right decision and make it quick.  A right shot dman, Nicks shot is heavy and he showed some flashes of that shot in playoffs where he was able to help the team offensively.  Quality, character kid.  Given the right opportunity I think Nick will surprise some people.

Eligible players by Central Scouting

Doug D’Arnall – Doug possesses a well above average skill set.  A beautiful skater and slick puck handler, he worked his way onto our second line in playoffs.  Shows a mean streak at times, Doug is poised for a breakout year next year.

Peter Drohan – Peter would be our award winner for most improved over two yrs if we gave out the award.  By far our top face off man this yr winning over 60% of his draws, Peter was an intregal part of our power play unit taking draws and using his 6’1 200lb frame in front of the oppositions net.  Peter is physically ready for Junior hockey and has shown he’s afraid of nobody in the corners.

Tyler Hinam – Tyler had a great start to the season before being sidelined with a broken collarbone.  A big scorer in bantam he showed flashes of that in the early going.  A good summer of training will help this right winger who has a nose for the net.  Great teammate, despite being injured Tyler was at every event helping out where he could.

Bradley Shaw – Bradley is built like a fire hydrant.  Played the majority of the year with Bowers because he was able to keep up with Shane as well as process the game at a quick pace.  A reliable penalty killer and also very effective on the forecheck due to his speed.  Bradley loves the corners and is usually first to pucks.  Bradley had an excellent season with us and was a key member of the NS Canada games team as well.

Eligible Players added to list by Q teams:

Ian MacPhee – Somebody is watching!  Ian steadily improved as the season went on, finishing the season on our second line.  A big (6 feet 190lb) North/South winger.  The biggest compliment I can give Ian is that when I put him on the ice I can trust him in any situation.  A left shot that can play the right side as well as he plays the left, Ian does all the little things that some people may not notice.  Ian will be a very good bottom 6 forward at the junior level some day.  Ian showed in his final yr of bantam he could put the puck in the net finishing 8th in league goal scoring with 21 goals (10 behind the top scorer named Shane Bowers).  Ian is poised for a big season next yr.
