Macs Sign 7 Bantams

2015-08-18

Players move on to higher levels. That is the reality and expectation of our club.

With the MHL and QMJHL drafts now complete and camps opening, a host of players are expected to jump to higher levels next year and the Macs are pleased to welcome the following players to our family for the 2015-16 season.

All 7 players were key contributors to their NSMBHL teams success this past season and we are extremely pleased to have them as members of our club for the coming season:

1.Sounthon Thammachack (Defense – Bedford Barons Major Bantam)
Sounthon was twice named the NSMBHL player of the week this year (Week 10 and week 18).  Sounthon logged big minutes for a very strong Bedford bantam team this winter.  He is considered a two way defenseman who has shown impressive progress in 2yrs with the Barons.  Sounthon was an assistant captain for Bedford this year and the coaches are extremely happy he chose Halifax for the 2015-16 season.  We look forward to having Sounthons positivity in our dressing room this year!
Season Statistics: 32 Gms 8G 15A 23pts (4th among league defenseman)

2.Logan Cash (Forward – Landworks Gulls Major Bantam) – Territorial Pick
Logan just finished a very successful season with the Gulls having finished 8th in league scoring with 20 goals and 22 assists in 31 games.  A rangy forward with a great stride and vision, Logan will be a great addition to the Macs forward group.  Logan was a member of the HNS U14 team during the 2013-14 season.  Logan was also named to the annual showcase game for the NSMBHL.  Look for Logan to be a positive contributor to the Macs.

3.Matthew Ormon (Right Wing – Landworks Gulls Major Bantam) – Territorial Pick
Matthew is the younger brother of former Macs captain, Nick.  Matt was a key cog in the success of the Landworks team this past season having finished second overall in NSMBHL scoring with 27 goals and 27 assists in 33 games.  He followed that up by leading the provincial tournament in scoring with 10pts in 4 games.  Matthew was a 2nd team NSMBHL all star as well.   He also led the U15 Atlantic Challenge cup in scoring with 9pts in 5 games helping Team NS capture a gold medal.  A young man with great character and determination, when he doesn’t have the puck he is determined to get it back.  We look forward to Matthew contributing to the teams success and keeping the Ormon name going with the Macs!

4.Matthew Steinburg (Center – ACCEL Hawks Major Bantam) – Territorial Pick
“Steiny” brings a wealth of leadership, character and compete to the Macs club.  Matthew was the captain of the Hawks Major bantams this past season as well as Captain of the Hockey NS U14 team and assistant captain of the U15 teams that captured Gold in back to back years.  Steiny finished 2nd in team scoring with 13 goals and 11 assists despite missing 6 games and was also named to the NSMBHL showcase game.  Matthew is a smart centerman who is willing to sacrifice his body and also does the little things that winning teams need.  We look forward to working with “Steiny” this coming yr to continue in his development.

5.Ryan Breau (Forward – ACCEL Hawks Major Bantam)
Ryan is a big strong forward with a very solid skill set for a young man his age and size.  Ryan was the leading scorer for the Hawks Major Bantams this season posting 15 goals and 12 assists in 31 games.  Ryan was also a member of the HNS U15 team that won gold this past season.  Ryan was named NSMBHL player of the week for week 12 this past season.  Ryan was able to dominate games physically at times this year as well as contributing on the score sheet and the Macs are excited to work with Ryan this year.

6. Jarrett Baker (Defense - Cape Breton Joneljim Cougars Major Bantam)
Jarrett was named a tournament all star at this years NSMBHL provincial tournament.  He had an outstanding year compiling 13 goals and 12 assists in 32 games to finish in the top 5 in the league in scoring among defensemen and tied for first among defenceman for goal scoring.   Jarrett brings an impressive combination of size and skill to the Macs blue line and will certainly be an important piece to the team this yr.  Jarrett was also a member of Team NS U15 that captured gold at the ACC where he accumulated 3pts in 5 games.

7. Dakota Lund-Cornish (Goalie – Landworks Gulls Major Bantam) - Territorial Pick
At 6'4, Dakota is an imposing figure in the net. Dakota finished 5th in the NSMBHL in GAA (2.09) and has a great combination of size, technical ability and athleticism.  The Macs are excited about the potential of Dakota and looking forward to molding him into another of the long list of exceptional goaltenders that have come through the program in recent years.

Stay tuned for more player announcements in the coming weeks.
