Past and Present Macs Play in Black History Hockey Game

2017-02-06

Tanner Tolliver and Nathan States

February is a month for celebrating black history, and the Maritime Colored Hockey League is a part of that history. On Saturday February 4th members of our Macs Family participated in this game in celebration of Black History Month.

From 1895 - 1925 hockey was a segregated game. Black players were not permitted to play in the regular leagues. As a result the Maritime Colored Hockey league began in Nova Scotia.

Every year 2 teams representing the former MCHL league play to celebrate the history of the league. The event is held to honour the past, the present and future of the sport for black hockey players.  Saturday’s teams were the AMERSTERDAM ROYALS and NEW GLASGOW ROVERS.

The Halifax Macs contributed to this event with a present member of the program, Tanner Tolliver and Macs Alumni Nathan States (who are cousins) along with Tanner Manson who played on the same line with Tolliver. All played for the AMSTERDAM ROYALS who won on this evening leaving with medals and the trophy. Tanner Tolliver was also named the game’s MVP.

The Halifax McDonalds were pleased to be involved with this event and encourage everyone to take the opportunity to learn about black heritage in Nova Scotia during Black History Month.
