MONCTON, NB, November 20, 2011 - The Halifax Titans took home the 31st Monctonian AAA Challenge Major Midget Division banner after defeating the Fredericton Canadiens 3-2 Sunday afternoon. It is the first time in the history of the Monctonian the banner went to a Halifax team.
Head coach of the Titans, Kirk Tomlinson, had said before the tournament began they wanted to win and they did just that before a crowd of fans at the Red Ball Internet Centre much to the delight of about half the crowd. The other half were hoping for the opposite result.

Fredericton scored first in the game, just over a minute into the second period on a goal by Noah Zilbert. But Halifax answered back quickly to knot the score as Jeremy Butterworth scored. Then the Titans built to a 2-1 second period lead on a power play effort by Brett McNeil.

When Noah Zilbert got his second goal early in the third to retie the game, the Fredericton fans let out a great whoop but another power play goal by John Mullally put an end to that and for the remainder of the game, the crowd cheered every effort by both teams but there was to be no further scoring in the game even when the Canadiens pulled their goalie for an extra man.

After the game, Canadiens coach, Kevin Pottle said he was pleased with how far the team had made it. "I think they performed well. They worked hard. They did what was asked of them," he said.

Tomlinson creditted the way his team had come together as a team to play a winning game. "We have 10 rookies and 10 returnees. It’s been great to see the guys who are back take on a leadership role. They know what winning is all about and helped the new ones get ready to play."

The Titans were provincial and Atlantic champions last year and that did a lot to prepare them for a tournament like this, the coach felt.

"I think we have set a new benchmark for everyone who plays for the Titans. It’s been a long time coming but we achieved it and it will point the way for future players," he said.

He played particular credit to Mason McDonald, a 15 year old rookie goaltender who became the goaltender of record for both the semi final and final games of the championship series. Regular goaltender Jacob Fancy who had led the team to the provincials and Atlantics last season was unable to play the final two games of the Monctonian.

McDonald was recognized as top goaltender of the game. MVP was Alex Hazelhurst of the Titans and the Most Sportsmanlike Player was Noah Zilbert of the Canadiens.
