Timmy with the 3rd Year Macs at the 2014 IceJam
Players cycle through the system every season in Major Midget hockey. If you’re lucky a team will have the opportunity to groom a player for three seasons. Even for coaches, the commitments to the program or the success of the team can determine how long you stay with the organization. For the Halifax Major Midget program there’s been one consistent, Tim Walsh better known as “Timmy”. For 16 seasons Tim has worn many hats. He’s started off as a time keeper, worked his way to the equipment manager and at one point he even earned the title as general manager.
Tim is a locker room leader and if you ask any of the players who know him, it’s safe to say he’s adored. Although Tim will tell you he’s just one of the boys. On any given hockey night you can find Tim exchanging “wise-cracks” with many of the players. But don’t be fooled, when Timmy is “laying down the law” he’s well respected. When push comes to shove, there’s nothing that Tim wouldn’t do for the players. When the team makes their annual trip to Quebec; Tim will always plan ahead for site-seeing or any event that will get the guys out of the hotel for a few hours.
Tim takes the health and safety of players very seriously too. Whether it’s sitting with a player on the ice while they are waiting for paramedics to arrive or drive a player to the hospital in a blizzard to ensure they get medical attention, Tim is that person. His efforts don't go unnoticed by other teams either. Tim will make sure visiting teams (especially those travelling from away) have a clean locker room or arrange for any of their needs while in our building.
He has often been referred to as “the glue” to our club. If one thing is for sure, it’s safe to say (in our league) there’s only one Timmy. For the time and efforts that he has put into our hockey club, we are very proud and thankful to say he’s with us.
For any current player or prospective player considering the Macs, having Timmy around is a huge bonus and an asset to the program.
