Bitter Sweet End of the Regular Season for the McDonalds

2014-01-29

Scramble in Front of the Gladiator's Goal

Wednesday night was the final game of the regular season for the Halifax McDonalds and no more fitting way than against their cross-town rivals from Dartmouth and under the bright lights of the Eastlink TV cameras.

Prior to the game a special ceremony was held to celebrate the recent IceJam success of the Macs and the Bantam champs, Bubba Ray’s Gulls. The party was short lived as the Gladiators struck early in the first period to take the 1-0 lead. The seesaw match would see the lead change several times throughout the game and would eventually need overtime to settle it. The Gladiators would skate away with the 5-4 victory but there was still much to be celebrated for the Macs.

The Halifax McDonalds would finish the season with a record of 28-4-0-1-1 and 58 points which was enough to secure 1st place overall in the league.

Forward Luc Poirier sat 2 points behind the league leader Mark Vokey (Weeks Major Midgets) going into Wednesday’s game but after a 3 point night Luc claimed the top spot. Luc also captured the league lead for Assists.

Reilly Pickard did not start Wednesday night but he also captured a league award. Reilly would finish the season with a 13-3 record and a 2.00 Goals Against Average, 1st in the league. His save percent was 0.93 which narrowly missed 1st overall as well.

All in all a very successful regular season for the Halifax McDonalds but the top prize is still available to claim.  The McDonalds open the post season this Saturday in their quest for another league championship. The Macs will meet the Cape Breton Tradesmen in the opening round. Game 1 is Saturday night at 6:30pm and Sunday is game 2 at 12 noon. Both games will be played in the Civic Centre.
